Downtown Hammond: An Award-Winning Destination

Hammond Downtown Development District (HDDD) in Hammond, Louisiana is one of three winners of the 2022 Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA), which recognizes communities for their excellence in comprehensive preservation-based commercial district revitalization. The 2022 GAMSA designations, sponsored by The Hartford, were presented at the opening plenary for the Main Street Now Conference in Richmond, VA.

Selected by a national jury of community development professionals and leaders in the fields of economic development and historic preservation, Hammond Downtown Development District is being recognized for their significant historic preservation efforts, vibrant small business environment, and dedication to inclusive, people-centered placemaking.

Each year, Main Street America and its partners announce the list of accredited programs to recognize their exceptional commitment to preservation-based economic development and community revitalization through the Main Street Approach™.

The Hammond DDD’s performance is annually evaluated by Louisiana Main Street which works in partnership with Main Street America to identify the local programs that meet 10 national performance standards. Evaluation criteria determines the communities that are building meaningful and sustainable revitalization programs and include standards such as, fostering strong public-private partnerships, documenting programmatic progress, and actively preserving historic buildings. The Hammond DDD is one of only 35 communities in the state of Louisiana; and the only city in Tangipahoa Parish to receive this distinction.
