WELCOME TO DOWNTOWN HAMMOND
WELCOME

In a city of 20,000, it’s a true feat of human ability that has allowed our beloved Downtown to remain both a quaint, welcoming historic district as well as develop into a bustling and thriving economy.  Partnership between public and private groups, businesses, and residents has produced and exemplary character and successful development for Louisiana’s Main Street communities.

Hammond became a state Main Street community in 1984 and immediately hit the ground running preserving and developing its treasured character and culture.Back then – and still today – residents proposed little change to the historic beauty of Downtown Hammond. The challenge became one of preservation and enhancement by instilling a greater sense of pride in and connection to the Downtown community as well as bringing in new and promising business opportunities.

GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMERCIAL PROPERTY/BUSINESS OWNERS

The Hammond Downtown Development District/Louisiana Main Street program is soliciting Redevelopment Incentive Grant applications from downtown commercial property owners and/or business owners located in the district.

The Hammond Downtown Development District/Louisiana Main Street program is soliciting Redevelopment Incentive Grant applications from downtown commercial property owners and/or business owners located in the district. To be eligible for grant funds, a building must be located within the Downtown Development District, be used for commercial purposes, and be at last 50 years old.  In addition, the proposed work must be approved by the local Historic District Commission or the DDD Design Committee.

The Louisiana Main Street program is offering two types of competitive grants: a $10,000 grant for projects totaling a minimum of $20,000, a $2,500 grant for projects totaling at least $5,000.  Applications received from the property owners and/or business owners will compete for funding with other Main Street communities across the state.

Louisiana Main Street assists historic commercial districts in their revitalization efforts. Funded by the state, the program operates under the umbrella of the National Main Street Center, an arm of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, DC. The state program provides revitalization technical assistance in the areas of economic development, exterior, interior and streetscape design, and promotion and organization.

Louisiana Main Street Redevelopment Incentive grant applications must be submitted for review to Terry Lynn Smith, Downtown Development District office at #2 West Thomas Street by June 8th.   For a copy of the application, details and map call 985-277-5681 or 985-974-2065.
